Our Journey

Greetings! I’m Will, and together with my cousin George, we embarked on the Blackdown Shepherd Huts venture back in 2011. Our humble beginnings involved constructing our inaugural shepherd hut painstakingly within the confines of my garage, drawing upon our combined 20 years of carpentry and bespoke building expertise. Over the years, we have been fortunate to serve numerous wonderful customers, allowing our business to flourish. While George later pursued specialization in property development, I now lead the company alongside a team of highly skilled craftsmen and women. Our workshop, spanning 6000 sq. ft., is located near Ilminster in Somerset.

Historical Background

Shepherd’s Huts have a rich history as portable structures that provided shepherds with shelter during the lambing season while allowing mobility around the fields. These huts were constructed using whatever materials were available to the farmers, resulting in varied shapes and sizes. Drawing inspiration from these original structures, we have adapted and modernized them for contemporary living. Our Blackdown Shepherd Huts offer a luxurious living space that provides more room than the traditional shepherd’s abode, which typically measured around 12ft x 6ft.
